365 Days Outside > 101-106

by Crystalyn

Day 101
This picture cracks me up. Juniper spent the night at Oma and Opa’s house, and she picked these flowers for Oma from their garden. (She didn’t want her picture taken, can you tell?) She also brought me home a nice big bag of asparagus. Mmmm!

Day 102
Juniper came home from Oma’s house with some fishing poles that Opa is letting her use! He even put together a tackle box for her. It was starting to rain a little, but that didn’t stop Juniper and Daddy from playing with the poles a little. They had fun casting off the deck, and Shaun MIGHT have gotten the line stuck in a tree.

Day 103
We went to Hermann for a visit today and stopped by the lake to play with the fishing poles some before we headed home. There was a lot of fence climbing and cow pattie avoiding going on! Juniper kept saying to watch out for “the creepy mud”, I didn’t bother explaining to her that it was cow poop haha!

Day 104
Juniper and I started a little landscaping project today. There is a little garden in our front yard by the road that is very overgrown. we started pulling up the weeds while Flynn sat on a blanket nearby. Then we all hung out for a while enjoying the nice breeze.

Day 105
Today I packed up a picnic dinner and we went for a walk. The plan was to walk down to the water fontain by the shops on Cherry Hill, but there was a little league game going on so we stopped and watched that instead! Juniper really wanted to join in the game. I told her maybe when she was bigger. She rode in the basket of the stroller the whole way home.

Day 106
When Shaun was mowing the lawn today, he found what seems to be a bunch of strawberries growing under the deck! I was taking pictures of them and Juniper wanted a turn so I let her use my little camera if she promised to be extra careful. I love how much she enjoys taking pictures.

100 Days of Outside Adventures

by Crystalyn

It’s crazy to think that we’ve been going outside for over 100 days now. I love looking back at these pictures and remembering all of the fun times. I really think Juniper has been outside more times this year than she has her entire life! At first I felt like I was wasting my time with this whole project. I thought, Juniper is way too young for this to have any sort of impact on her. And she always fought it when I tried to get her out the door. There were definitely days when I said, just go blow some bubbles on the deck and let me snap a couple of pictures. I felt like this was just one of those ‘for the blog’ projects. I never intended my blog to be filled with ‘for the blog’ type projects, I really want this to be a place that is true to our lives. So that bothered me a little.

BUT. We’ve come a long way, and I can honestly say at this point that this project has become a huge part of our lives. We all love going outside and exploring the world. Juniper would rather go for a walk than watch cartoons. If you ask her if she wants to go outside, she screams woohoo and grabs her shoes. Or goes barefoot. (But there must always be underwear. No underwear = no outside. Juniper is not a fan of this rule.)

If there is one thing I want the kids to get out of this project, it is that this world is an amazing place and we are so blessed to have it. I certainly have gained a better appreciation for it.

I’ll be back later today with this week’s outside adventures.

Cameras

by Crystalyn

We got two fun packages in the mail today. My new lens and little camera! I wasn’t going to buy a new camera lens for a while because I had my little green camera, which I love and in the right lighting takes great pictures. Then the screen cracked… I was super bummed because I don’t even know when or how it happened. Lame, huh?

So I went ahead and ordered a new lens for the D40x. We found a pretty good deal for it on Amazon. That same day I found a really good deal on a new used Coolpix on Ebay so I bought that too! I now have both my cameras back and it’s great.

What can I say, I’m a Nikon girl through and through :)

House Drawings

by Crystalyn

I am working on a couple of drawings right now. I showed a peak of the first one in this post, and the other one is a 5×7 house sketch. I’ve drawn quite a few houses at this point, which is kind of funny to me because it’s not something I ever thought I would often draw. All of the straight edges and symmetry makes them a nice break from drawing people. Houses don’t really have any emotion, so in that sense they are a bit easier. And I get to use my cute, little metal ruler that I love so much! The first house I can remember drawing was my grandmother’s house in Connecticut. I wonder if anyone still has that sketch…

Here are a few of the other houses I’ve drawn. (And there is this one.) I’m hoping to have the new one finished up tonight, so I should be sharing it soon. I’m also working on updating this site to have more examples of my work. A lot of people have asked to see more drawings so I’ll be adding a gallery soon. I really love drawing and I hope to have many more opportunities to do so!

April Wrap Up

by Crystalyn

April was a month of taking a step back and refocusing. We’ve started clearing out a lot of the clutter in our home, renewed our motivationrelaxed some and learned to take things one day at a time. I’d say it was a pretty good month. I haven’t had much luck with my cameras though. First my big Nikon’s lens bit the dust, and then the screen cracked on my little Nikon! I feel like a serial camera murderer. Both replacements are on their way though. Speaking of on their way, some really good friends are coming to visit us this weekend and I am BEYOND EXCITED!

My craft room is under serious renovation right now and I am super excited to get it all settled. I’m trying to get everything organized to a point where I don’t have to drag everything out whenever I want to find something. On top of this huge mess, I’ve been working on a lot of bucket hats and a few drawings too! (I like drawing because it is the LEAST messy of all the creative things I do.) Hopefully I will be able to share a peak into my progress soon.

365 Days Outside
I think we’ve hit a wall in our going outside challenge. We do go outside everyday, we love hanging out on our deck in the evening! It’s been nice having a swing out there. But it seems like we just always do the same thing and it’s not as exciting anymore.  To give us a jump start, I’ve been gathering up some fun ideas for activities to do outside. Like this scavenger hunt, Juniper would love that! For a while we were going on walks every evening, but the kids are getting too big to stick them in the same single stroller so we haven’t for a while. I would love to get some bikes and a double bike trailer though! We live close to a nice trail and I think it would be fun to take family bike rides.

Bucket Hats Tutorial

by Crystalyn

Well here it is! I finally put together a tutorial for the bucket hats I have been working on for Laura. These reversible hats are given to cancer patients, and they area really easy to sew up. Once you’ve made one you might as well make a dozen. If you want to make some and send them to me, I’ll pass them along to Laura to bring to the hospital.

I left out any ironing in this tutorial until the very end, because when I make these I tend to make them several at a time and it’s just faster to skip ironing until they are finished. Of course, feel free to iron out the seems between each step if you are just making one.

a1

1. Cut out your fabric in this basic shape. Mine are about 8 inches tall and 5 inches wide at the base. You’ll need to cut 6 pieces for the outside (x3 each in coordinating fabrics), 6 pieces for the inside (x3 each in coordinating fabrics), and 6 pieces of fusible interfacing.

2. Take the 6 pieces of fabric you are using for the outside and iron the interfacing onto the wrong side of the fabric.

a2

3. Stack the fabric, right sides together, with fabric #1 on the bottom and fabric #2 on the top. It’s important that all three stacks are the same.

4. Sew down the right side of each stack, lining up the edge of the fabric with the edge of the presser foot. You can sew down the left side if you prefer, just do the same on all three.

a3

5. Here is what you will have once all three stacks are sewn.

6. Snip the top off of each section to help keep the bulk down.

b1

7. Next you’ll be sewing each of the three sections together. Notice how the pattern will alternate.

8. Line up two of the pieces, right sides together. You can pin them if you want. Then stitch down one side, leaving the same seem allowance you used for the three stacks.

b2

9. Repeat step 8 to add the third section.

10. Once you’ve stitched down all of the edges, you’ll have the basic shape finished. Feel free to stick in on your head and feel accomplished!

b3

11. Repeat steps 2-9 to sew together the pieces for the inside of the hat. Once you have both side finished, flip one over and slide it inside of the other side so the right sides are together.

12. Line up and pin each section at the seam, pushing the seams in opposite directions to help keep the bulk down. (See the end of this post for a little tip for if you run into trouble lining them up.)

c1

13. Once you’ve got it all lined up and pinned, sew around the brim of the hat.

14. Leave one section open so you can flip it inside out.

c2

15. Flip the hat inside out (or outside in I guess). It will look sort of like a ball at this point… In fact, now I kind of want to sew some balls for the kids.

16. Pull the edge nice and tight and pin all the way around. I like to use one pin at each section seam and one in the middle of each section, and three or four pins holding the hole closed.

c3

17. Top stitch along the brim, sewing as close to the edge as you can.

18. I like to add some decorative stitches, I think it adds a nice personal touch. Trim up your loose strings, give it a good once over with the iron and you are done!

So Flynn probably isn’t the best model for the finished hat, but isn’t he adorable?! I suppose you could make a more precise pattern by measuring the circumference of the intended head and divided by 6. (Shaun would be proud of my math term usage.) Then you would make the pattern pieces that wide at the base, adding a bit of a seam allowance of course. I played around with the basic pattern shape a little bit and got some fun results! BUT that is a project for another day. (I’ll share as soon as I get the gift in the mail! Don’t want to ruin any surprises after all.)

*TIP*
Here is what you do if you are having trouble getting the inside and outside to line up just right. Say one side of the hat is slight bigger than the other side. Just unpin the two sides, and stitch up the seam a tiny bit. I ended up doing this a lot with the fabric I got from Laura, because the pieces were very unevenly cut. If you cut carefully and always use the same seam allowance, you shouldn’t have much trouble.

I hope that all makes sense! If you have any questions, just let me know.

Bucket Hats

by Crystalyn

I’ve been working on more bucket hats for Laura. She gave me enough fabric to make 20 hats, and I might make a few more with more boy-ish prints. So far I’ve got twelve of them ALMOST done, and I’d like to finish them up and give them to Laura this Sunday. Lindsay came over one night last week and helped me sew a few. Even though her sewing machine machine was on the fritz the whole time, it was so much fun to have someone to sew with. Can’t wait to do it again.

I’ve been wanting to do a tutorial for these because they are so easy to sew up and they go to a great cause. But with my camera lens in Nikon heaven, I’ve been having trouble getting photos that are pretty enough for my liking. So today I set up my sewing machine on the deck so I could take decent pictures in the sun light! If there was a table on the deck I think I would sew out there more often! I just love being outside. I will have the tutorial ready to post as soon as I finish editing together the photos. Probably on Monday.

It feels so good to use my talents to serve others. Sometimes I get a little too wrapped up in my own issues and forget that. Speaking of service, Craft Hope just launched their next project! I’m excited to work on this one. I’ve already got the perfect fabric to use.

365 Days Outside > 96-100

by Crystalyn

Day 96
We didn’t get out much today. I still had a pretty bad headache from smacking my head on the cabinet door the night before. But I think it’s cute when Juniper sneaks out onto the deck and sits quietly by herself on the swing. She likes to practice her writing out there in the sunshine.

Day 97
Juniper and I went for a flower picking walk today. We found lots of wildflowers along the main road and had a little impromptu fishing adventure!

Day 98
Flynn and I spent some time on the deck today enjoying the evening before bedtime. He is the sweetest little man in the whole world and I love love love his kisses! Also, he is obsessed with glasses. Mostly mine, but sometimes I’m able to distract him with cheap kids sunglasses.

Day 99
It was a beautiful day outside today. So when I got home from work we decided to wash the car. Juniper had fun using the hose but she wasn’t a big fan of the sponge! (It was too squishy hahaha!) After the car was clean, Juniper put on her bathing suit and played in the water for a little while.

Day 100
One Hundred! I had planned on doing something big and fun for day 100, but it snuck up on me! We played ball in the front yard today and looked at all of the trees in our backyard. We discovered we have a big mulberry tree!! I’m excited!! There is another tree that I THINK might be cherries, but we’ll see. And the crab apple tree has tiny apples on it. That one is Juniper’s favorite.

Drawings

by Crystalyn

Great post title, right? It’s late. I’m tired.

So I don’t think tonight could have gone much better. The house is clean(ish), I’ve got my lunch made for tomorrow, the kids went to bed 30 minutes early and I’m curled up in bed with a pencil and some paper working on a new drawing. This one is going to a lovely couple who is expecting their first baby. I have another commission in the works that is a 5×7 house drawing for a repeat customer. And when these are done, I have three or four more drawings planned! Some are gifts, one is an art exchange that I am super excited about, and one more is a drawing of a friend’s son who just joined the Army National Guard. I’m loving all of these opportunities, and I hope to have many more!

Meal Planning!

by Crystalyn

I took a little crafty break last night and started decorating my refrigerator! I’ve shared pics of my magnetic scrapbook before. I’m looking forward to adding to it as we live life. I know I have a lot more cute magnets around here somewhere, I just have to dig them up.

ANYWAY.

A couple of weeks ago I shared with you all my struggles with our food budget, and I got a lot of great feedback! I really enjoyed reading the emails and you all inspired me quite a bit. I’m happy to report that we’ve been adapting a Meal Planning system in our house. We’ve been spending less on groceries AND actually have food to make. (Have you ever gone grocery shopping and the next day thought to yourself, what the heck did I even buy? There’s nothing to eat! So annoying.)

I’ve decided that the coupon thing just isn’t for me. Sure I’ll use a good coupon if I happen to find one online, but I just don’t buy that much processed food to begin with. I had a coupon for $1 off organic celery and I was excited until I got to the store and realized that I also had to buy fancy salad dressing to get the discount. Lame. But having a meal plan for the week has helped a LOT, and I’m having fun putting them together!

Here are our 7 meals for this week.

  1. Zucchini Patty Sandwiches w/ quinoa and spinach salad
  2. Chicken, Spinach, and Mushroom Roll Up w/ corn on the cob
  3. Ham and Cheese Pasta w/ garlic bread and salad
  4. Raviolis w/ roasted brussels sprouts
  5. Lemon Pepper Salmon (Based off of this recipe) w/ rice and roasted cauliflower
  6. Chicken w/ stuffing, corn, and sweet potato cakes
  7. Burritos w/ quinoa with black beans

I don’t assign a meal to a specific day of the week because our schedules are crazy and unpredictable. I also like making more than I need for each meal and freezing half, or eating it for lunch the next day. I might even start making lunches for Shaun and the kids and night before. Often times I’ll come home from work to hear “well, we haven’t really had lunch yet.” Most days I’m usually home by 3ish so I suppose that isn’t SO bad.
